Tasmania's favourite peninsula delivers in spades – white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, pink mountains – with plenty of distinctive produce to flavour the journey.

Day 1: Head to Coles Bay

From Hobart, the approach to Swansea features one of Tasmania's most curious convict constructions. Spiky Bridge was made from field stones laid without mortar or cement and the parapet has upright stones, giving the bridge the spiky appearance of its name.

Aim for lunch and a lazy afternoon at one of the winery cellar doors clustered around Cranbrook. Milton's cellar door commands a glorious spot overlooking the vines, and Craigie Knowe is the region's oldest vineyard, with a cellar door inside an old barn. The sleek contemporary design of Devil's Corner delivers gorgeous views of your Freycinet journey ahead, as well as wood-fired pizza, oysters and seafood.

Swing onto Freycinet Peninsula and settle in for your stay at Freycinet Resort.

Day 2: Around Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park, Tasmania's oldest park (along with Mount Field National Park), has a wealth of walking trails. Set out on a guided day walk with Experiential Tasmania, taking in the perfect form of Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach.

They call it Great Oyster Bay for a reason. Head to Freycinet Marine Farm for oysters and mussels direct from the farm leases.

Sweeten the afternoon at Ice Creamery & Co in Coles Bay – count 24 flavours of Tasmanian-made ice-cream.

It's a short journey from the Ice Creamery to a dinner of wood-fired pizza next door at Géographe Restaurant and Espresso Bar, then head to Freycinet Lodge for your overnight stay.

Day 3: Around Freycinet National Park

Pack some adventure into your Freycinet stay. Cruise around the peninsula and into the most famous bay of all with Wineglass Bay Cruises, or set out for a paddle across Coles Bay and into Honeymoon Bay with Freycinet Adventures.

Take to the sky for a scenic flight over the peninsula and Wineglass Bay with Freycinet Air.

The peninsula might be narrow but it has plenty of hidden tracks that can be explored on a quad-bike tour with All4.

Head back to Freycinet Lodge for dinner at one of their two restaurants or lounge bar, and stay overnight.

Day 4: Coles Bay to Bicheno

Freycinet has the east-coast beach - Wineglass Bay – but it also has many other stunning strands. Sleepy Bay's red boulders and sands light up at sunrise, while Honeymoon Bay, with its backdrop of the Hazards, is as romantic as its name suggests.

Visit Cape Tourville Lighthouse via the accessible boardwalk upon a vast sea cliff. The cape is part of the East Coast Whale Trail, so keep an eye on the ocean. Markings on the boardwalk give a sense of the size of these ocean giants.

On the drive out of Coles Bay, make a stop at Moulting Lagoon, a vast wetland that's typically home to thousands of black swans at any time, and stop for a hearty meal and some ice-cream at the Pondering Frog.

In Bicheno, link up with our Bays and Bikes or Grazing the East itineraries on the Great Eastern Drive.
