Fabulous Freycinet

From Hobart, the approach to Swansea features one of Tasmania's most curious convict constructions. Spiky Bridge was made from field stones laid without mortar or cement and the parapet has upright stones, giving the bridge the spiky appearance of its name.

They call it Great Oyster Bay for a reason. Head to Freycinet Marine Farm for oysters and mussels direct from the farm leases.

It's a short journey from the Ice Creamery to a dinner of wood-fired pizza next door at Géographe Restaurant and Espresso Bar, then head to Freycinet Lodge for your overnight stay. 

Pack some adventure into your Freycinet stay. Cruise around the peninsula and into the most famous bay of all with Wineglass Bay Cruises, or set out for a paddle across Coles Bay and into Honeymoon Bay with Freycinet Adventures.

The peninsula might be narrow but it has plenty of hidden tracks that can be explored on a quad-bike tour with All4.

Head back to Freycinet Lodge for dinner at one of their two restaurants or lounge bar, and stay overnight. 

Freycinet has the east-coast beach - Wineglass Bay – but it also has many other stunning strands. Sleepy Bay's red boulders and sands light up at sunrise, while Honeymoon Bay, with its backdrop of the Hazards, is as romantic as its name suggests. 

Visit Cape Tourville Lighthouse via the accessible boardwalk upon a vast sea cliff. The cape is part of the East Coast Whale Trail, so keep an eye on the ocean. Markings on the boardwalk give a sense of the size of these ocean giants.

On the drive out of Coles Bay, make a stop at Moulting Lagoon, a vast wetland that's typically home to thousands of black swans at any time, and stop for a hearty meal and some ice-cream at the Pondering Frog.
