Tasmania is a collector's paradise, with a trove of antiques and vintage shops featuring some of the finest collections in Australia and plenty of fossicking fun.

From serious inner-city collections to treasure-filled emporia in country towns, Tasmania's antiques trail has dozens of destinations for travellers with an appreciation for quality, design and the patina of time. 

Expect antique furniture, fine jewellery, practical and decorative objects, retro homewares, vintage clothes and cars - and plenty of unique and surprising curiosities.

Hobart

From colonial oddities to funky mid-century finds, there's a timeline of treasures to be found in Hobart’s eclectic constellation of antiques and vintage shops.

In the city centre, Stonewall Antiques has a refined selection of antique furniture, vintage clothing and reproduction items. 

Antiques to Retro has Hobart’s largest selection of quality furniture, art and collectables, from antique to mid-century.  

Antiques on Macquarie is a glittering showcase of china, crystal and silver displayed alongside fascinating old Tasmanian furniture.

A few minutes north of Hobart CBD, Archive Antiques specialises in estate sales, with a collection spanning Georgian to mid-century Scandinavian design, and plenty of obscure finds from industrial and maritime history.

Nearby, Scotty's on Argyle and Astrolabe Booksellers are nothing short of an institution in Hobart for those seeing antique furniture, quirky retro pieces and books. If Scotty doesn't have what you're looking for, there's a good chance he knows where to find it.

New Norfolk

In the heart of the Derwent Valley, New Norfolk is the self-proclaimed antiques capital of Tasmania, with more than a dozen well-established shops and dealers. 

Ring Road Antique Centre is a treasure trove with 10 dealers under one roof showing wares from Victoriana to 20th-century collectables. 

At Willow Court Antique Centre, in the town’s old asylum building, it's easy to lose all sense of time browsing curated collections ranging from trucks to textiles. 

In the centre of town, the popular The Drill Hall Emporium is a serene temple of decorative and useful objects. And the emporium has two equally enticing sister shops nearby: Flywheel, a vintage stationery and letterpress studio; and Miss Arthur, a boutique new homewares shop next door.  

Saturday mornings in this sleepy town are enlivened by a weekly market perfect for vintage bric-a-brac fossicking as well as stocking up on local produce and handmade items.

Launceston

Launceston's carefully curated antiques and vintage shops make fossicking for special finds a true pleasure. Red Fox Antiques specialises in antique and vintage items ranging from furniture, crystal, and fine china to covetable antique jewellery and quality vintage clothing. Exquisite styling and relaxed service make it a favourite haunt for locals and travellers. 

Clockwise is a temple to the age-old craft of horology, where clocks of all ages and eras are restored and shared. 

Step back in time at Seven Sisters Antiques for pigeonholes full of collectables, fine china - and a particularly gorgeous cash register. 

Owl Antiques and Collectibles has a colourful assortment of beautiful and collectable items with a particular penchant for music-related items.

Shop the Heritage Highway

Wherever you are on the island, there are antiques shops and collections worth taking the time to explore. Here are a few fossicking pitstops between Hobart and Launceston on Tasmania's Heritage Highway, aka the Midland Highway. 

Sorell

Sorell Antique Centre is a co-op of antique dealers with a remarkable variety of treasures in a sprawling, multilevel space - from furniture, tools, homewares and clothing to very reasonably priced antique and vintage jewellery. 

Richmond

In the historic town of Richmond, Walter & Co is an experience in stepping back in time. Its specialty is fine English Georgian and Regency pieces, with pops of 20th-century design. Also expect Australian colonial furniture, art and other rare objects. 

Nearby, Walker & Walker stocks lovingly restored or preserved pieces and designer homewares. And Warwick Oakman Antiques is the place to go for quality 18th and 19th-century English and Australian furniture and decorative arts. 

Vintage on Bridge is a hidden gem packed to the rafters with vintage homewares, fashion, accessories and nostalgia.

Oatlands

In the picturesque sandstone town of Oatlands, The Jardin Room is a trove of 18th to 21st-century French and European antiques and décor. A stone barn houses architectural pieces and objects that would be quite at home in a French chateau or rustic villa in the Italian countryside. Also nearby, Oatlands Antiques and Collectables is great for timber furniture and vintage homewares, while Elm Cottage Store offers a carefully curated selection of linens, gifts and homewares in a Georgian cottage. 

Campbell Town

Wildes Antiques in Campbell Town is a sandstone building packed with unusual collectables and local and international treasures at affordable prices. For bibliophiles, The Book Cellar is a fabulous bookshop located in the convict-built cellars of one of Tasmania's most interesting heritage properties, the Foxhunters Return, an 1830s coaching inn.

Evandale

Neighbouring shops in the heart of this historic village are essential stops for antiques lovers.
