Wittenoom | Mudlark Theatre

Two women face the camera with only half their faces showing and a white powder on their shoulders.
Mudlark Theatre and IO Performance in association with Theatre North present Wittenoom by Mary Anne Butler. A deeply regional Australian story with an operatic heartbeat; a vivid and poetic theatre work brimming with hope, humour, and humanity. Dot is dying of mesothelioma; an incurable cancer caused by blue asbestos. Pearl sits by Dot’s deathbed as the Dogs of the Apocalypse hover, waiting for Dot to finally let go. Return to The Past: Dot and Pearl live in Wittenoom, the blue asbestos mining town in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Drawn by the promise of a new future, so begin glorious days when the Pilbara’s stunning landscapes and close-knit community shaped an idyllic lifestyle. Until it all begins to erode with the inescapable truth that their town was built on a lie. Wittenoom is a profoundly affecting theatre work, an intimate story of life, love, and loss. Uncovering a terrifying part of our Nation’s history and the devastating human cost of corporate greed, Wittenoom is a story that demands to be told.
