Wall in the wilderness

No itinerary should be set in stone, but it should be carved into rare Huon pine.

Artist Greg Duncan has knocked the history of the highlands into 100m of timber, to create the Wall in the Wilderness.

Situated at Derwent Bridge, the wall portrays the sweat, spirit and stamina of brave Central Highlanders, paying homage to the individuals who settled and protected the area.

Duncan has wrangled horses, thylacines and foresters into every metre of luminous panel, which each took a month to render. And true to his style, it has an uncanny realism.

Duncan's works are typically sought after by collectors around the world, but this one’s a stayer, as it might be a little tricky to uproot from its deep glowing cavern.

The Wall in the Wilderness is a must, if not for the history then for the sheer spectacle of one of Tasmania’s most ambitious artworks.
