Warm up with spirits and truffles, inhale the crisp air and encounter woolly wildlife.

Weave north-west gold into your Tasmanian winter road trip: feast lavishly on paddock-to-plate produce, plucked from volcanic soils; experience the snowy elation of alpine elevation; toast marshmallows under the stars; and go to the blustery edges of the island – it might just unleash your wild side.

Eat

Food is at the heart of this fertile region.

What better way to sample the deliciousness than on the ground with the producers? Get in the dirt with the dogs: hunt for aromatic treasures on the Truffledore’s boutique farm and devour truffle-laden dishes. Meet the winemakers and tuck into a long lunch looking out to sea at Ghost Rock Wines, or high in the hills at House of Hargrave Vineyard and Cellar Door.

Become acquainted with the origins of your food: meet the makers at Hursey Seafoods and slurp wintertime bivalves at Tarkine Fresh Oysters.

For something fiery, warm the cockles with a wee dram. Matt and Sarah guide you through their small-batch spirits at Alchymia Distillery, while in Devonport, Southern Wild Distillery serves flights of award-winning Dasher + Fisher Gin.

Stay

Find a cosy place to lay your head and be inspired by wintry north-west accommodation experiences.

Go on, splurge on a slice of King Island luxury: be pampered at off-grid paradise Kittawa Lodge, or rejuvenate at coastal haven Ettrick Rocks. Remember to look up – dark skies mesmerise at stylish Table House Farm and secluded Rocky Cape Retreat. Hear the soft sounds of nature and count stars at Gleneagle Tasmania luxury glamping, or snuggle up for romance beneath the Milky Way in a tiny house in the wilderness.

Nothing melts away the winter chill quite like a steamy outdoor tub. Plonk in at lavish Eagles Nest Retreat, with a symphony of croaking frogs for company. Or swap frogs for miniature goats at quaint Hideaway Farmlet.

Play

Follow your curiosity into north-west Tasmania’s winter wonderlands.

You can’t help but let out an audible “aww” when cuddling a Tasmanian devil joey at Wings Wildlife Park and Devils @ Cradle sanctuaries.

For an organic animal-spotting encounter, watch little penguins waddle up from the water at Burnie Foreshore, Lillico Beach, and King Island’s Grassy Harbour. Speaking of King Island, the golf courses are extra invigorating during the Off Season: give Cape Wickham or Ocean Dunes a go. Or seek higher, icier ground on a mystical walk around Dove Lake or Crater Lake, both within Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

Want more mountains? Hike till you hit the heavens upon photogenic Mount Roland or the famed Cradle Mountain. While you’re here, build a snowman.

Drive back down to sea-level, perhaps passing a tapestry of Sheffield’s street murals, and go to the very edges of Tasmania for a big gulp of the world’s cleanest air. Keep the revelry burning into the evening at an artistic festival – or just keep breathing in that pure air.
