Highlights

Your new Odd Job

This is where your passion for fitness meets a love of furry friends. As the Wombat Walker, you’ll help maintain the physical and mental wellbeing of our wombats by leading them on their morning excursions. Think of it as a commute, but cuter and cuddlier; these walks are essential to keeping them happy and healthy during the winter months. It’s their favourite part of the day (and it’ll probably be yours, too).

Responsibilities

  • Coax them out of bed to get them moving; our wombats would sometimes rather have a sleep-in.
  • Encourage them with praise and pep talks, motivating them to complete their morning walks.
  • Guide and keep them on track; our wombats can be adventurous and sometimes wander off.
  • Ensure decorum and good behaviour. No chasing birds or distracting the other animals.
  • Keep them fuelled on the journey with their favourite snacks so they don’t get puffed out.
  • At this wildlife sanctuary, you get to have a closer interaction with a wombat than you would in the wild. After you leave East Coast Natureworld, ensure you keep a safe distance from your new mates.

Skills and attitude

  • An animal lover who treats our wombats and their habitat with the utmost care and respect.
  • A friendly companion who can forge a sense of trust with our four-legged friends.
  • A keen walker who loves to get up and out in the mornings, come rain or shine.
  • A nature lover who appreciates the natural beauty of our reserve.
  • A kind and patient soul for when our wombats decide to do their own thing.

In return

  • A unique, one-day volunteer experience, starting the day by walking George the Wombat and exploring the unique wildlife within East Coast Natureworld.
  • Take a break from your regular routine and get a wellbeing boost courtesy of cute cuddly wombats.
  • The successful applicant will be compensated with flights to Tasmania, car hire, two nights’ accommodation, and a bounty of local artisanal goods for their time.
