Your new Odd Job

Oysters taste better in winter. The Off Season is the ideal time to pull on a pair of waders and immerse yourself in the tranquil waters of Great Oyster Bay as an Oyster Organiser. Lose yourself in the rhythm of work: gathering, sorting, and cleaning shellfish. Experience the therapeutic calmness of this almost meditative role while ensuring each oyster meets the high standards typical of Tasmanian seafood.

Responsibilities

  • Pull on your waders, roll up your sleeves and bring in the oyster bags from the bay.
  • Load and unload the oysters from the boat for a decent morning workout in the great outdoors.
  • Meditative oyster organising and grading – sorting them into small, medium and ‘whoa, that’s a big one!’
  • Scrub the oysters clean to ensure they look just as good as they taste.
  • Taste-test the freshest oysters you’ve ever eaten…purely for quality control.

Skills and attitude

  • A love of the outdoors – seriously, workplaces don’t get any better than the Bay.
  • Flexibility to wiggle yourself in and out of our waterproof waders.
  • Patience and a penchant for peace and quiet to fully embrace the slow, methodical pace of oyster organising.
  • An eye for detail to ensure each oyster is primped and polished to perfection, ready for the slurping.
  • A passion for eating oysters – you’ll try the best you’ve ever had in this Odd Job.

In return

  • A unique, one-day volunteer experience where you get to spend the day sorting and slurping oysters plucked straight from the bay at Freycinet Marine Farm.
  • Take a break from your regular routine, and slow things down in the soothing waters of Great Oyster Bay, courtesy of your new Odd Job.
  • The successful applicant will be compensated with flights to Tasmania, car hire, two nights’ accommodation, and a bounty of local artisanal goods for their time.
