Your new Odd Job

Magic and music lies just beneath Tasmania’s surface - and you are about to step into the belly of the beast. In the subterranean setting of Gunns Plains Caves, embark on a musical journey alongside local musician, Charlie. As Cave Conductor, you’ll collaborate with Charlie, who will perform musical interludes for tour groups, echoing melodies off the limestone walls. Bring your own instrument to test the mesmerising acoustics of the cave yourself, and improvise with Charlie to help him warm up for the big performance. Between tours, there will be ample opportunity to jam and play together as a musical duo.

Responsibilities

  • Explore the caverns and passageways to reach the cave concert space and conduct a sound check to test the acoustics.
  • Tune up your instrument and jam with Charlie to help him warm up for his performances.
  • Sit back with the audience and feel the caves come alive with the sound of music.
  • Play and improvise as a musical duo between tours, and hear your music amplified in these ancient limestone caves.

Skills and attitude

  • You can play a musical instrument and have a passion for experimenting with sound.
  • A finely-tuned ear to ensure the performance can reach every crack and crevice.
  • Willing to improvise with Charlie, adjusting musical styles to suit the cave's acoustics.
  • A respect and appreciation for the unique beauty of Gunns Plains Caves.

In return

  • This is a one-day volunteer position, where you can jam on your instrument in an unforgettable location and enjoy the subterranean concert with local musician, Charlie.
  • This experience lets you indulge your passion for music in a one-off underground Odd Job.
  • In addition to this experience, the successful applicant will be compensated with flights to Tasmania, car hire, two nights’ accommodation, and a bounty of local artisanal goods for their time.
