Sandpiper Beach House

When the macrocarpa trees at East Beach were past their prime the late Kenneth Plumstead engaged "chain-saw" artist Eddie Freeman to turn them into a work of art. These trees had sculptures trapped inside and Eddie has discovered them. A sea captain at the helm, dolphins, eagles and lighthouses are marvelously revealed in wood. More of Eddie Freeman's carvings may be seen at the Windmill Point reserve in George Town.

At the Low Head Seafood Shack, you can experience the classic Australian vibes of fish and chips and ice creams on the beach. Set in a unique, historic and beautiful village - the atmosphere is relaxed, kids roam free and families have fun. Fish and chips, burgers, tacos, salads, and seasonal specials including scallops, oysters and sashimi. Located in a prime and picturesque waterfront position, seconds from the water's edge and central to the growers and makers of the Tamar Valley. Grab a local wine, beer or cider fun drinks and sweets for the family. Casual beachside dining, where you can wander around the Pilot Station lawns, laze beneath the Norfolk Island pines or book a sunny table in the courtyard or cosy indoor spot within the vintage coxswain's house. In a days visit, enjoy the local beaches perfect for safe family swimming, visit the lighthouse, learn about shipwrecks and sailors in the maritime museum, ride the local MTB trails of Mt George, catch a squid or fish from the breakwater wall. It is home to the Low head Penguin Tours, visit on sunset for a tour to see the fairy penguins returning home to the beach or stay on site in the family beach cottages, and pick up some supplies from our onsite little provedore stocked with Tasmania's best!

On the picturesque Low Head Peninsula at the mouth of the Tamar River is Australia's oldest pilot station, dating from 1806. It is a delightful collection of cottages in a beautiful setting. The Maritime Museum occupies the 1835 convict-built Pilots' Row, the oldest and largest building on the site. It tells stories of shipping on the Tamar River and has an extensive display of relics from the days of sail and steam. The museum is well-suited for families, having something of interest for people of all ages. Children are encouraged to handle the ship's helm, operate the engine room telegraphs, sound the foghorn, ring the ship's bell and send messages in Morse Code. There are other exhibits around the grounds. Continue to the headland, past the old cable station to Australia's third oldest light station, with its grand lighthouse. Here is the only operating G-type foghorn in the Southern Hemisphere. Also at this site is a Marine Education Centre and a collection of small craft. The foghorn sounds at noon each Sunday with the displays open 11.30am until 12.30pm and to pre-arranged tours and school groups at other times Low Head has good accommodation facilities, great beaches and is less than an hour from Launceston along the East Tamar Highway and only five kilometers from George Town.
