Wynyard is best known for its chief landmark, Table Cape, a dramatic formation that locals simply call the Cape.

Like The Nut, which dominates the town of Stanley, this coastal plateau is the plug of an old volcano. Unlike The Nut, though, Table Cape is cultivated.

The Cape is crowned with a tulip farm. Each spring, travellers flock to see the rainbow-like rows of flowers. The tulips are at their most spectacular from late September to the end of October. Green thumbs can also buy bulbs from the farm’s visitor centre year-round.

Take a snap – and it might include Table Cape Lighthouse in the background. Head to Table Cape Lookout and stroll the cliff-top walking track to the lighthouse, gazing out over the vastness of Bass Strait.

Learn more about the area’s fascinating geology by exploring Fossil Bluff; these coastal sandstone cliffs feature bands of prehistoric fossils.

Where

Wynyard is a 45min drive (60km) west of Devonport and a 2hr drive (165km) from Launceston.

  • Browse your way through Wynyard’s shops and boutiques, or check out the regular Wynyard Foreshore Market.
  • Tune in to the Table Cape Sound Walk, part of the annual Permission to Trespass festival in July, winding between Table Cape Lookout and Table Cape Lighthouse.
